Matthew Byrne
Writer. Founder. Digital marketer. Based in South Yorkshire.
I spent seven years in Beijing building the Spittoon Arts Collective from a single poetry night into one of the largest English-language literary collectives in China. Since returning to the UK in 2020 I’ve worked in professional marketing, completed the CIM Level 6 Diploma with multiple distinctions, and spent increasing amounts of time thinking about what AI makes possible for people who make things for a living.
This site is the record of what I’ve built and what I’m building next.

Spittoon Arts Collective
In 2015 I started a poetry night in a Beijing hutong bar. Within five years it had grown into one of the largest English-language literary collectives in China — seven cities, eight magazine issues, sixty volunteers, two hundred events, and international chapters from Gothenburg to Addis Ababa. This is the archive.
